New Kindle for the non-U.S. market!

Kindle International

Kindle International

October 2009, Amazon finally announced their long awaited version of their Kindle for e-book outside of the U.S.

This is indeed really exciting news for the ever growing number of ebook fans world-wide! The new Kindle is already set to be shipped to eagerly waiting customers from around the globe.

You can now receive your electronic books, as well as newspapers and magazines wirelessly while at home or abroad in over 100 countries world-wide. Amazon says it is possible to have your book downloaded and ready to be enjoyed in 1 minute or less.

Part of this process is the same 3G wireless technology you’ll find in advanced mobile phones. This way, you’ll never have to go hunting for a Wi-Fi hotspot.

However, unlike the deal with cell phones, there are no yearly contracts and no monthly wireless bills. Furthermore, there is no need to to install any software, and no type of syncing is required.

You want more good news?

How about the fact that Amazon has sliced the price? The Kindle used to sell for $299. The new, global Kindle is $279, while the U.S. wireless model is $259. Sweet!

Portable Ebook Reader

The Ebook Reader & Touchpad Technology

cheap portable book reader, sony portable reader digital bookAre You Ready To Go Paperless?

The question is lurking in the back of all our minds as things around us slowly become digital – What should I choose? With technology like the touchpad and touchscreen panel , thanks to capacitive sensors, technology is becoming more tactile, we feel like we can interact more effectively with our electronics. But, are you ready to replace your paperbacks and hardcovers with an eBook reader. There are many already on the digital bandwagon. However, there are many that say they will never jump on board.

So, why don’t people want to go paperless? After all, we’re trying to become a more environmentally sound society, right? Well, for starters everyone loves the feel of a good book in their hands – cracking open that spine for the first time and enjoying the smell of the new printed paper. Ah, and the look of the book upon your bookshelf. You can organize, stylize and decorate with hardbacks or paperbacks. You can swap books with your friends. With digital magazines you can’t clip out your favorite articles and make a handy file folder for the best recipes. Finally, it’s a nice escape for a lot of people. When you sit on a the bus on your way to work or wait in the lobby somewhere, it is nice to get away from the computer screen you probably stare at all day. It lets the eyes rest for a moment.

While there seems to be many reasons why people are avoiding the eBook reader, many are embracing it because of the positive aspects. It saves on printed material. It also allows you to store many books, newspapers, pdf documents and magazines all on one device. They are small enough to stick in a purse or briefcase so you can easily carry it with you wherever you might go. Plus, with the use of the touchscreen technology it might end up right next to the iPod as the coolest gadget to own. It can never hurt to be hip, right?

Who knows the future of the eBook reader as it is still relatively new and fighting for its place among the newest, coolest technology. However, another important aspect to consider is how it might impact the future of the printed word if it does become the norm. Will this mean copies of books are pirated and hacked thus a decrease in earnings for writers across the board? Will it mean a more environmentally friendly way to get our news, recipes and fiction? Maybe the next time you go to Barnes and Noble it won’t be to pick up your favorite author’s new book, perhaps it will be to hook up to a download station where you can peruse and purchase it digitally. I don’t know. One thing is certain, however. We haven’t seen the last of the eBook reader. We’ll have to wait to see where it lands.

It is hard to say whether society will decide to go digital when it comes to books. It’s hard to imagine a world without libraries and good bookstores where you can grab a cup of coffee and relax. Maybe, in the end, there is space and a place for both. What will you decide?

When Dad Loves Reading: The Perfect Gift

pda ebook readerHow wonderful would it be for your father to be able to carry around all his daily newspapers, his current magazines he enjoys dipping into, a few best-sellers and his work documents?

What?

He does that already? – Carries them around in his HEAVY case?

Okay let’s rephrase the question:

How wonderful would it be for your father to carry all of this around with him in a thin-as-a-pencil, lightweight gizmo instead? How wonderful would it be for your father to be able to read any of these publications, any time he wants? And, to be able to download a new magazine or book within minutes, where ever he happens to be?

It sounds so science fiction, doesn’t it? But it’s not. There’s an Amazon product called The Kindle that does all this, right now.

It’s really light so your father would have no difficulty holding it. It has huge buttons on both sides for turning pages. Your father could read one-handed, and turn pages with the slightest twitch of his finger. If your dad has arthritis in his hand, having The Kindle means he’ll be able to read happily without bringing on more pain.

Does your father find a lot of print too small or fuzzy to read comfortably? He will find The Kindle really easy to read because the print is sharp and crisp. Also, he can change the font size to suit him.

pocket ebook readerReading The Kindle is not like reading from a computer screen. Computer screens are lit and they flicker slightly. This is what strains the eyes and makes it hard to read from a computer screen for very long. The screen on The Kindle is not lit. And it doesn’t flicker. Why not? Because it’s made from a remarkable material called electronic ink which makes the screen appear like good quality paper. For a lot of people, reading The Kindle is soothing and enjoyable. Your dad will enjoy that too.

Your dad won’t have to be connected to a PC to download a book or a magazine or a newspaper. His newspaper and magazine subscriptions will automatically be downloaded unto the e-book reader without him doing anything. And to get new books, right there on The Kindle he can go to Amazon, buy the book, download and start reading in minutes.

So there’s an idea for a rather special gift for your father. One you know for sure he’ll get huge amounts of pleasure from, every single day.

The Kindle: Some of Its Advantages

ebook reader reviewsIf you enjoy reading and learning then the Amazon Kindle may be the new gadget for you. After all how often do you have the ability to bring 200 books with you? Yet only carry a few ounces of weight.

Also you have instant access to a dictionary and other reference manuals with a touch of a button. Not to mention the ability to browse and download best sellers, newspapers, and blogs on the fly.

If you want to conserve on battery life you can press Alt-A, and put your Kindle into sleep mode. If your reading and need to check the time press Alt-T, or press the search button and enter @time.

If you’re unsure about where you are or where you’re going? When in browser mode press Alt-1 and the Kindle will plot your current location on Google maps. Alt-2 will find nearby gas stations, and Alt-3 will find restaurants. You can use Alt-5 to create your own search.

You can also listen to free audio books on your Kindle and use online apps such as Yahoo messenger, Gmail, Google reader, and the mobile version of Google calendar.

Once you’ve found your way around the Kindle and have filled it up with those 200 book titles. You may discover that you have run out of room on your well stocked eBook reader. No worries. You can extend the storage capacity of your Kindle with a 4 or 8 GB SD or SDHC card.

Need a break from reading. Play a game of Mine Sweep on your Kindle. Here are the steps:

1. Go To Home Screen
2. Press Alt + Shift + m simultaneously
3. The game should appear, just follow navigational instructions on screen
4. Enjoy

The Kindle is also a picture viewer. If you would like to start a slide show, go to picture view mode and then press Alt + 0 this will initiate the slide show. You can use Alt + 1 to begin the slide show and Alt to end it. It’s also possible to initiate a slide show of any document just press Alt + 0 while viewing and take it from there.

pocket pc ebook readerThe Kindle is one of the coolest gadgets out there, and eBook readers are definitely the wave of the future. Imagine college students not having to lug around tons of heavy books and skipping those 4 hour book store lines all together. Not to mention the cost savings and instant updates and corrections.

Books aren’t going away but I think that portable eBook readers are going to become more popular and will quickly be part of the main stream. Imagine lying on a beach and browsing best sellers, actually deciding your vacation reading while on vacation instead of having to pack something that you hope will be interesting.

Even Oprah is a fan of the Kindle. She says she likes to spend her Sunday morning reading the latest edition of the New York Times without even getting out of bed. Ebook reading devices are definitely the wave of the future and the Kindle is a great beginning to this wave.

Book Reading Device

Green Books or Greenbacks

adobe ebook readerGreen books are great–as long as publishers and book buyers have the green to pay for them.

Green books making headlines should come as no surprise, since green industries are now "in"–and whatever’s "in" is where the money is.

German publisher, Dorling Kindersley just announced that it has created "a global publishing first, using the most ethical and environmental practices available… with its Made with Care series of striking new books."

Kindersley’s green book transformation includes:

  • No paper book jackets
  • Used card stock which is 100% recycled
  • Printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper, which is sourced from responsibly managed forests.
  • Used vegetable inks
  • Energy-efficient in-line binding process
  • Minimized travel for distribution (the books are printed locally in Europe)
  • Works with the best environmental printers in the business.

Ebooks – Greener than Green

microsoft ebook readerSeveral years ago by default, modern technology already started courting Mother Nature when it introduced ebooks to a dot.com marketplace still in its adolescence. Now with the advent of the latest ebook reading devices, the two have just tied the knot and embarked on a green honeymoon together.

Ebook reading devices are greener than the greenest green hard copy books, and with Amazon’s Kindle and the Sony Reader delivering a product with a reading screen that many book lovers claim is less strenuous on the eyes than paper, this is an environmental marriage made in heaven.

Avid readers can now carry around over 200 books in their purse or briefcase on a device that is slimmer and lighter than a standard-size trade paperback. And if 200 books isn’t enough, a tiny memory card "chip" slips into the kindle for even more storage.

A Kindle owner has access to over 90,000 books already "virtually stocked" in the Kindle Media Center of the Amazon website. (Audio books are also available at Amazon through audible.com, and easily downloadable.)

Ebooks are not for everyone, however. Many people have no desire to deal with new-fangled technology. "A book should be printed on paper without ever having to be charged!" (What is this world coming to?)

Green Eggs and Books

cheap ebook readerThe market for children’s books will never disappear as long as we humans keep producing more children. Children who are avid readers are always asking for yet another book and friends and family love to give books to children as presents.

Any teacher or parent knows that kids give their books a good workout. Few books that are beloved by children avoid food stains and beverage spills or corners chewed off by the family pet (or teething sibling).

Today’s electronic reading devices require tender loving care that few if any children are equipped to provide. That doesn’t mean that inventors are not already working on indestructible models. However, we can safely say that children’s paper book are still going to be around for a long time.

Green Profit Margins – Reality vs. Illusion

Let’s get real about the cost of producing green hard copy books in the US. The media is flooded with articles about large chain bookstore complaints that they can no longer compete with Target/Walmart/Costco Made in China low production costs.

Mom and Pop corner bookstores are often forced out of business when a Barnes & Noble or Borders came to town. Now, David and Goliath both find themselves pitted against the "Great Walmart" of China-made goods.

Green books or green turkeys?

Can we find a green solution for Made in China books, or will customers be willing to pay more for green books printed in the US?

It takes a great deal of "go green" dedication and deep pockets for customers to pay double or triple the amount for the same book they can buy at Costco’s, when they know that book may end up lying outside in the rain because Dick or Jane forgot to bring it inside in time and the babysitter was feeding Sally.
